Are you feeling guilty of the things that you have done in the past? Have you been trying hard for a while to forget the wrong you did to someone? Are you unsuccessful in overcoming guilt? Is the burden of guilt getting too heavy day by day? Guilt is good to an extent that it holds us accountable for the mistakes we have committed. “They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.” (Romans 2:15)
You might try to console yourself saying, “Everybody does the same”. You might even think that you can overcome guilt by involving yourselves in doing good works like giving to charity, helping the needy and so on. But the truth is that good deeds won’t undo your bad deeds. “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” (Romans 19:20) Guilt is the outcome of the sins we commit in our depravity against God’s Holy law. By doing the things prohibited by God, all of us are guilty before God. “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” (Romans 3:19)
God is Holy and He can’t tolerate sin. In His Righteousness, God must punish sinners and the punishment for our sins is everlasting separation from Him. We deserve eternal destruction in hell for our sins. Receiving forgiveness for our sins from God is the only way out of the feeling of guilt. But there is no forgiveness available to mankind without bloodshed. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. (Hebrews 9:22)
Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God came into this world and died on the cross as a sacrificial lamb for our sins. The forgiveness of God is available to everyone through the shed blood of Jesus. “In Jesus Christ, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7). God forgives all those who truly repent and believe in the Lord Jesus for their forgiveness. He wants every one of us to be forgiven of our sins and overcome the guilt we battle with.
